After my workout on Monday I decided it was time to take a week off from training. I love training, so it always kills me to take time away from it, but I have come to learn that it’s absolutely vital to my long-term success, both in terms of strength and in terms of staying healthy. In place of training, I’ve been trying to catch up on some sleep and some other stuff I need to get done, and I must say I feel great. I’ll continue in this fashion for the rest of the week and then get back to it with a vengeance next week.
I make a point to do this from time to time and it’s been immensely helpful. I used to worry that if I missed even one workout my strength would go right down the tubes; now I know that opposite is the case. If I train balls to the wall all the time, my strength starts to plummet. I’m usually strongest right after taking a week off. For those of you that never lay off the gas pedal in the gym, I strongly urge you to think about it.
Anyhoo, I’ve mentioned several times that I’m way behind getting my training videos put up here, so I thought I’d share a few from the past couple weeks. I’ll do a more detailed write-up of what I’ve been doing the past month because I did try a few things, but for now I’ll just show some highlights of various things.
Back Extensions with Rear Delt Raise
I couldn’t think of a good name for this one (any suggestions?) but it doesn’t really matter because it’s an awesome exercise. Gets the whole posterior chain at once.
Lean Back Chinups
This is a great one I picked up from Charles Poliquin. Pull up normally, then lean way back on the eccentric, keeping your body straight. This will smoke your lats, upper back, and core.
Another great one to get the core. Lean back slightly for added benefit.
