Experience What It’s Like to Be at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning

Whether at conferences or via online messages, I’m frequently asked what it’s like working under Mike Boyle as Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning. Truth is, as a new strength coach, I really couldn’t ask for a better learning experience. We deal with hundreds of athletes each day of all ages and abilities, and we are privy to a bunch of awesome educational opportunities on a regular basis. For example, we have two staff meetings a week where Mike speaks on various topics related to strength and conditioning, coaching, or whatever else is on the agenda for that day. Other times [...]

Good Reads for the Week

I hope everyone had a good week and is staying safe from Hurricane Irene. It hasn’t hit too bad in Massachusetts yet, but I’m hearing it’s going to get pretty gnarly later in the day, so hopefully it isn’t as bad as it’s being made out to be. Only time will tell I guess. Tomorrow is my birthday, so on a selfish level I’m hoping it isn’t that bad or else it will end up being epically boring. I’ll keep my fingers crossed. In any case, I’ve put together a great list of fitness articles from the past week, so [...]

Great Bodyweight Face Pull Variation

Anyone that reads this blog with any regularity knows I’m a huge fan of inverted rows. One of my favorite versions of this exercise is the inverted face pull. Like the name suggests, it’s just a face pull done with bodyweight using suspension straps. I have mentioned inverted face pulls before, but in the past few months, I have tweaked the way I am doing them so I wanted to talk about them again and show what I’m doing now. Before I say anything, here is how they look in action. The main difference is that I’m using a narrow [...]

For Your Viewing Pleasure: Take 45

I’m on my way in to work, but I wanted to leave you with some awesome training videos from the past week. Enjoy! Jim Kielbaso trains the world’s strongest nun. Yes, this is a real nun. Gotta love it. She’s strong to boot. This cracked me up and impressed me at the same time. Also gotta love the Eminem music for a nun video. […]

My Grandmother is Cooler Than I Am

About two months ago, I made a post (you can read it here) about my grandmother’s affinity for swimming and her dedication to exercise. I was not expecting much of a response, but in the time since that post, I have received no less than 20 messages (probably closer to 30) from people that were touched by my grandmother’s persistence and determination and used it to try to motivate their own grandparents or parents to get moving and try out the pool. My grandma is always going around touting the benefits of the pool (hey, can’t argue with results), so [...]

Good Reads for the Week

I hope everyone had a good week. We have one more week left of the summer session here, so things are busy wrapping up with that. Couple that with going to the 2 day Functional Movement Screen seminar in Boston on Friday and Saturday (which was awesome, by the way) and the fact that yesterday was my grandma’s birthday and today is my mom’s birthday, and it’s been super busy. No complaints though. I do hope to get some more blog updates in the near future, but realistically it probably won’t be until next week, so hang tight. I have [...]

One Year Is In the Books. Thanks!

It was brought to my attention this morning that today marks one year since I started this blog. I must say I was a bit surprised that it’s been that long because this past year has honestly flown by. I guess that’s a good thing since they always say “time flies when you’re having fun.” Anyway, I just wanted to thank all of you who have continually read this blog, given feedback, and supported me. When I first started it a year ago, I really didn’t even know what a blog was, and I certainly didn’t think it would turn [...]

Jen Grasso does some awesome pistol squats. Love it! […]

Good Reads for the Week

The summer is just flying by, at least for me. It honestly feels like it just started, but I just realized there are only two more weeks of the summer session. Crazy. It’s been busy, but good busy. I’ve still managed to put together a great reading list from the past week, so fear not. Before I get into though, I have a few announcements. 1. I had another article go up on T-Nation on Tuesday called Breaking Down the Single Leg Squat. Give it a look and let me know what you think. 2. We have a lot of [...]

For Your Viewing Pleasure: Take 43

I’ve put together a great list of videos from the past week so before I waste too much of your time I’ll just get right into it. The list is long enough as it is, so I decided against putting any of my own videos in this week, but I put up a bunch of new ones so be sure to subscribe to my You Tube channel. Ok, it’s time to getcha popcorn ready! 10 “X” Muscle Ups followed by 10 regular muscle ups. This is just unbelievable. […]
