Exercise of the Week: Skater Squats

This week’s Exercise of the Week is Skater Squats. I first saw this exercise while reading Mike Boyle’s first book Functional Training for Sports (great book, by the way), but I never tried out until recently after Mike talked about it in one of our recent staff meetings. It came up in the meeting because Mike was contemplating using it as a replacement for trap bar deadlifts with athletes suffering from back pain. Being a back pain sufferer myself, I figured I would try it out. I liked the exercise, but after getting used to it, I did not find [...]

Random Thoughts and Housekeeping

The past two weeks have been especially busy, and the next two look to be even busier. It’s generally a good busy, but busy nonetheless. I have a bunch of things I need to take care of, and to top it off, I ran into some car troubles. In a nutshell, my car broke down last Thursday which requires some substantial repairs, and then yesterday the loaner car I am driving got hit with a pebble while I was on the highway, cracking the windshield. Good times. Like my main man Forrest Gump says though, s#%t happens. Anyway, I will [...]

Good Reads for the Week

Well, it's Super Bowl Sunday and I can't remember ever being less excited for it. I don't particularly like either team, but I REALLY don't like Pittsburgh (translation: I don't like Ben Roethlisberger), so I guess tonight I'm a Packers fan. Whatever. It's the Super Bowl. Who doesn't watch it? If nothing else, the commericials should be good. If this commerical is a sign of things to come, it should be awesome. Anywhoo, here is a compilation of a ton of great articles and podcasts from the past week. It will certainly keep you busy while you wait for the [...]

For Your Viewing Pleasure: Take 17

I was going to wait to make this post until sometime over the weekend but decided I better post it now before it gets completely out of control. This may be the longest list of videos since I have started making these weekly posts. If not, it’s close. I keep saying I want to make the list shorter, but I just keep coming across more and more great stuff. I guess that’s a good problem to have though right? Let's get right to it. As usual, I did not post any of my own videos but please be sure to [...]

Random Thoughts and Quick Hits

It's been a wild week here, but (knock on wood) the weather seems to be slowing down so hopefully that's a sign of things to come. I have not had as much to write the past several weeks, so I thought it would be a great time to drop some random thoughts and quick hits. Here it goes. 1. MBSC Winter Seminar. We are having the annual seminar at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning this Saturday, February 3rd. The speakers will be Dan John and (obviously) Mike Boyle. Dan will be giving two one-hour talks and Mike will be speaking [...]

Exercise of the Week: Alternating 1 Leg Inverted Rows

Well, it’s Wednesday, so you know what that means… a GIANT snowstorm. Seriously, it seems like every Wednesday we get absolutely dumped on. I know snow is part of the deal when you live in New England, but it’s getting a little excessive. I hope someone slips a chill pill in Mother Nature’s drink soon to get her to calm down a little bit. Worry not though, because Wednesday also means it’s time for a new Exercise of the Week, so here’s something to check out while you are stuck at home (if you live in an area where it’s [...]
